At Mitchell Mechanical, we want to offer advice to help you maintain the quality and longevity of your HVAC system. In an effort to do so we have created a number of support articles that we hope you’ll find useful when trying to diagnose (and possibly correct) a problem you may be having with your system. These articles are attempted to address any HVAC questions that you might have.
PLEASE NOTE: We advise that you consult with a licensed technician before performing any work. Should you decide to attempt to diagnose a problem with your HVAC system, we advise that you ensure the power to the system has been turned OFF.
FILTERS
Check your filters once per month to make sure it is clean and functional. When filters get dirty they can cause undue stress to be placed on your HVAC equipment and can restrict flow of clean air into/throughout your home.
VENTS
Return air flow vents in your home should never be obstructed or inaccessible. When you close air vents in your home you can actually cause air to flow in directions not intended. Keep the path for/to air open to help ensure quality circulation.
BATTERIES
Many people fear the worst when their HVAC systems turns off. They discover the thermostat is off and not responding and they immediately go into panic mode. It could be as simple as replacing the batteries in your thermostat (note that not all thermostats require batteries).
THERMOSTAT
Not all thermostats are created equally and not all offer programmable functionality. It is estimated (by the Department of Energy) that you can reduce your home’s heating and cooling costs by up to 35% when you install a thermostat that is programmable.
